Normally, one might expect to find conversations such as these going on at corporations across the world. It would be very unusual, though, to find these conversations going on among high school students in Kuwait, unless, of course, they're part of the K-Business program run at Al-Bayan Bilingual School.
In K-Business students learn all about the life of a corporation through running one themselves. Students interested in the K-Business program at BBS, after getting to assigned to companies, elected their own student officers, including CFO (presidents), CFO (treasurers), Vice-Presidents of Manufacturing and Sales in early January. Within two weeks the companies issued shares of their stock and came up with their company names and logos.
Commented activity founder Dr. Daniel R. Fruit, "Kids and parents sometimes ask me: 'What are you simulating?' I tell them,
"We're not simulating anything. These are real companies."
Three of the companies elected to sell a product they would manufacture while a fourth decided to go into services. Q8 corporation, headed by youthful president Ziyad Al-Qatami, produced a colorful magazine; Bayan Customs, presided over by junior Ahmad Al-Jouan, customized mobile phones and pictures frames; and SBU company, led by senior Zeinab Hassan, made customized stress balls called Bother Buddies©. Vision Company, under the direction of Dheidan Al-Shammari, took a different direction, providing guided, bilingual tours to Falaika Island.
Students in the company filled several different roles. For example, each student bought one share of his company's stock, making he/she eligible to vote in elections. In the three production companies, students performed all the production, for which the company paid them salaries and wages, and all sold their product while the Vision employees acted as tour guides and coordinators. Officers kept production records, sales records, and accounting books. The companies even paid their adult sponsors a yearly fee for advice and supervision. In early May, the companies liquidated and redeemed (paid off) their stocks.
Added Dr. Fruit,
"I'm proud of the way our students performed in this very short business cycle. It's really tough to get a company going, selling, and liquidating in only five months. Yet they did not give up, and some of them turned a profit."
Dr. Daniel R. Fruit and Ms. Saema Farooki direct Al-Bayan's K-Business program.
Bayan Customs wins the "Golden Company" Award as K-Business Years Ends
The Bayan Customs Company headed by CEO Ahmed Al-Jouan garnered the "Golden Company Award" at the awards ceremony that ended the first season of Al-Bayan Bilingual School's K-Business program.
K-Business is a program in which a group of students starts, runs, and liquidates its own small corporation. During the course of a K-Business year, which for 2005 ran from January to May, students needed to issue stock, select a product, start up production, pay costs, sell, and liquidate (go out of business). Students, with the advise of adult sponsors, completely ran each small business.
The Golden Company award, given to Bayan Customs, recognizes the company that best displays the traits of profitability, educational value, strong management, and honest business dealings. Bayan Customs also received the Most Profitable Company award as it returned a 10% dividend for each share of stock. Company CEO, junior Ahmed Al-Joan, also received the Outstanding Young Businessman award. Bayan Customs customized mobile phones and pictures frames. Company officers included: CFO Abdulmoshen Al-Sager; VP of Human Resources Lulu Al-Rodaini; VP of Manufacturing Abdulaziz Al-Bahar; VP of Sales Ghalia Hayat; CIO Abdulrazzaq Al-Khathemi; Marketing Manager Abdullah Al-Ghanim; and Purchasing Manager Aisha Al-Bader. The company recognized Reem Al-Thekair as its top production worker and Lulu Al-Rodaini as its top salesperson.
SBU (Students of Bayan Union), head by senior Zeinab Hassan, received recognition as the Most Persistent Company as they endured the departure of half of their founding members. SBU produced custom stress balls called Bother Buddies©. Company officers included: CFO Saoud Al-Sabah; VP of Human Resources Khaled Al-Bader; Marketing Manager Yasmeen Hayat; and Purchasing Manager Manayer Al-Musallam. The company recognized Saoud Al-Sabah as its hardest worker. CEO Hassan, received recognition as the runner-up as Outstanding Young Businessman contest.
Vision Company, headed by senior Dheidan Al-Shammari, received the Most Unusual Product award as Vision provided guided, bilingual tours to Falaika Island. Company officers included: CFO Omar Al-Abo; VP of Sales Anwar Al-Muzaini; VP of Human Resources Dawood Al-Omani; VP of Services, Ahmad Al-Shammari; CIO Hamad Al-Mousa; Marketing Manager Yacoub Al-Rifaie; and Purchasing Manager Mohammed Al-Roumi. The company recognized co-top salesman: Ahmad Al-Shammari, Fajer Al-Sabah, and Mohammed Al-Roumi.
Kuwait Corporation, headed by tenth grader Ziad Al-Qatami, sold and produced its own magazine, Q8 Uncovered. Its officers included: CFO Ahmad Al-Qamlas; VP of Human Resources Ahmad Al-Sabah; VP of Sales Ahmed Al-Ghanim; CIO Mohammed Al-Zabin; Marketing Manager Sarah Al-Fouzan; and Purchasing Manager Hamad Al-Mufarrej.
Commented K-Business founder and sponsor, Dr. Daniel R. Fruit:
"I was proud of all of our students this year. It's very hard to go from selling stock to liquidating in 5 months, particularly when everyone came in with no experience. My particular congratulations go out to Bayan Customs and Ahmed who have set a high standard for future companies."
K-Business sponsors included founder Dr. Daniel R. Fruit and Ms. Saema Farooki.
