BASIC RULES:

1. Participation in the scene should be divided as equally as possible.

2. Make-up, costumes. props, lighting. and music are not permitted.

EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING

DEFINITION:

The extemporaneous speech is an oration on a topic unknown to the contestant until 1/2 hour before his/her performance. Ideally, it is an oral essay with an effective introduction, logical development, and a sound conclusion. Students draw from topics provided by the host school, in an enclosed area, one half hour before the performance. Topics are questions based on information taken from Time and Newsweek magazines in the 3 months prior to the tournament, but not from the most recent two weeks before the tournament.

BASIC RULES:

Each contestant will draw a topic from those provided by the host school. he/she will have the one half hour prior to the round to prepare his/her speech. The students will prepare by studying articles and notes in his/her file, as prepared before the time of the tournament. Each school will have its own file of magazines, and each student, his/her own notes.

The speech should be structured so that it includes a short introduction and the communication to the audience of the exact topic (question) of the speech in the initial phase. Main points should be clear, easily identified by the audience, developed in sufficient depth to prove the points, and connected together in a logical progression of ideas. Information used in the speech should be documented, and the speaker should include verbal references which inform the audience of the documentation regarding particular pieces of pertinent information, The effective conclusion should lead naturally from the body of the speech, providing the audience with closure on the topic without addressing additional points not developed in the body of the speech. The judge should evaluate the speaker on the content and organization of the speech, the speaker's effective use of language, and poised platform behavior.

TIME :

The contestant will have 1/2 hour to prepare his/her speech. He/she must deliver the speech in under six minutes.

DEFINITION:

The impromptu speech is an extemporaneous oration an a topic unknown to the contestant until immediately before his/her performance. Ideally. It is an oral essay with an effective introduction, logical development, and a sound, logical conclusion. There is a one-minute period before the speech for preparation.

BASlC RULES:

1. Each contestant will be given one of the following types of topics: incomplete sentences or phrases. Quotations, single words. He/she will have 30 seconds to select from among these topics, then one additional minute to organize his/her thoughts (All contestants will receive the same three topics,)

A short introduction should be given, after which the participant must develop the subject in a logical way. If a series of points are given, it should be done in such a way as to connect them naturally and with ease: the contestant should consider each point in some depth and avoid merely giving a superficial list of ideas. The conclusion should be effective and to the point. In addition to the content of the speech, the verbal and physical poise of the contestant should be taken into account in the judge's evaluation.

3. Speakers may not enter the room until it is their turn to speak. It is most important that no one, whether speakers or members of the audience, leave the room until all participants in every room have finished the round.

4. The speaker must not speak less than two minutes and not more than three minutes.

TIME :

The contestant will have 30 seconds to choose one of the three topics, after which he is given 1 minute to prepare the speech and make notes. The actual time of the impromptu speech is 3 minutes. Judges should give tie lowest mark to a contestant who speaks far less than 2 minutes or more than 3 minutes and 10 seconds.

RESTRICTIONS :

Speakers may not enter the room until it is the turn to speak. The judge assumes responsibility for calling each contestant in the order listed on the event ballot. It is most important that no one, whether speakers or members of the audience. leaves the room until all participants in every room have finished the impromptu round.

MULTIPLE READING

DEFINITION:

A multiple reading allows students the chance to read a selection that involves several characters, positions, or attitudes. The students within the group may switch characters within the course of the reading. Often, multiple readings present an adaptation of a longer work of literature, however, readers may present a totally new work, a collage of selections, or even a work of non-fiction. To give some idea of the range, at one event, multiple readings held the following titles: "Aids," "Curious George," "25 Shakespeare Plays in Ten Minutes," and "High School: It's a Concept!"

MATERIALS:

The group may present one or more selections from prose, drama, or poetry. The multiple reading may concern a serious or non-serious subject. While a group may not present a multiple reading previously performed at KFSAC events, that group's multiple may contain work previously presented in other events as part of the multiple reading.

BASIC RULES:

1. The multiple should include an introduction.

2. The selection may be serious or humorous, but all multiple readings will be considered as one category.

3. A manuscript is required, and all students in the multiple group must hold their manuscripts at all times.

4. The work should develop distinct characterizations though characters may portray a position rather than a particular person.

5. No costumes, make-up, music, lighting, or props may be used.

6. Students can take no more than 2 steps in any one direction in a single movement.

7. Multiple readings contain as many as 9 students and as few as 3.

8. Students cannot sing.

TIME LIMIT:

The entire presentation, including introduction and transitions (if any) may not last more than twelve minutes. No minimum time is set. Speakers will be asked to quit speaking 10 seconds past twelve minutes and will be penalized 3 speaker points unless, in the opinion of the judge, the overtime was due to audience reaction.

STORY-TELLING

DEFINITION:

Story-telling entails the art of presenting a piece of literature to a younger audience, defined, in this case as those between the ages of 7-12. A story-teller must choose words and concepts carefully, not only to reach this younger audience, but also to hold their attention. Note that, due to the relatively low level of English in the target audience, language chosen must match needs of the listener.

MATERIALS:

The speaker may present one or more published selections from prose, drama, or poetry either aimed at this age level or adapted to suit their needs. The teller may also write an original work. The work cannot have been presented at previous KFSAC tournaments.

BASIC RULES:

1. The speaker should deliver an introduction aimed at getting the attention of the listener.

2. The selection may be serious or humorous.

3. A manuscript or note-cards may be used, but the speaker should have such familiarity with the story that he/she holds the listeners attention.

4. No costumes, make-up, music, lighting, or props may be used.

5. Hand gestures or movement are allowed. However, the teller must keep a script with him/her.

6. The story should be appropriate in terms of subject matter and presentation for the target audience group.

TIME LIMIT:

The entire presentation, including introduction and transitions (if any) may not last more than six minutes. No minimum time is set. Speakers will be asked to quit speaking 10 seconds past six minutes and will be penalized 3 speaker points unless, in the opinion of the judge, the overtime was due to audience reaction.
